Zebra Mussel ( Dreissena polymorpha ) Population Distribution In the Mohawk River System : A pilot Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dreissena polymorpha, the zebra mussel, a pestiferous mollusk from Eurasia, has spread throughout the navigable waters of the Northeastern United States since its introduction into the Great Lakes system in 1986 (Maxwell, 1992). The appearance of these organisms in the Mohawk River system was first reported in 1991 (O'Neill, 1991). By the summer of 1994 zebra mussels had successfully colonized much of this waterway; however, the spatial extent of this colonization had not yet been determined.

Quagga mussels Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (Andrusov, 1897) in the Main River (Germany)
The first record of the quagga mussel Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (Andrusov, 1897) in Germany is described. This species has expanded its distribution area in Europe at a slower rate than the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771). Recent records from the Danube in Romania and from an enclosed Rhine-Meuse estuary in The Netherlands, suggest that the MainDanube canal and River Rhin...

1. We used long-term data and a simulation model to investigate temporal fluctuations in zebra mussel populations, which govern the ecological and economic impacts of this pest species. 2. The size of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population in the Hudson River estuary fluctuated approximately 11-fold across a 13-year period, following a cycle with a 2–4 year period. 3. This cycling w...

متن کاملHydrology and grazing jointly control a large-river food web.
Inputs of fresh water and grazing both can control aquatic food webs, but little is known about the relative strengths of and interactions between these controls. We use long-term data on the food web of the freshwater Hudson River estuary to investigate the importance of, and interactions between, inputs of fresh water and grazing by the invasive zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). Both fresh...
